Prioritizing Procrastination: Guide to Monkeying Around with Your Time

Inspired by Wait But Why

Tonight, we’re going to tackle a topic that’s near and dear to all our hearts, or should I say, near and dear to our derailed, chaotic, and constantly distracted hearts. Yes, folks, we’re talking about prioritizing — or, as most of us know it, “procrastinating.”

Embrace the Monkey

First things first, acknowledge the presence of the Instant Gratification Monkey. It’s there, and it’s not going away anytime soon. You might as well give it a seat at the table because it’s going to chime in with its opinions anyway. Just remember, sometimes the Monkey’s suggestions are, well, bananas. Imagine you have a report due at work, and the Monkey suggests you spend the next hour researching obscure conspiracy theories online. Suddenly, you’re knee-deep in theories about alien invasions and lizard people running the world. Thanks, Monkey!

Set the Stage for Panic
You know that sense of urgency and dread that hits you when a deadline is looming? The Panic Monster loves that stuff. So, create your own Panic Monster moments by setting artificial deadlines for tasks. Convince yourself that your laundry needs to be done by 9 AM tomorrow, or else the world will end. It won’t, but your laundry might. Pretend your laundry deadline is the impending apocalypse. As the clock ticks down, the Panic Monster kicks in, and you find yourself speed-folding your socks with the intensity of a doomsday prepper organizing canned goods.

Master the Art of Selective Productivity

As John Oliver would say, “You can’t do everything, and neither can I.” It’s true; you can’t do it all. So, prioritize what’s truly important. Maybe it’s finishing that work project or spending quality time with loved ones. Choose your battles wisely and let the Monkey run free with the rest. You’ve got a choice between attending a work meeting and trying to decipher your cat’s mysterious behavior. You wisely choose the meeting but promise the Monkey that you’ll schedule a “Cat Conspiracy Theories” session later.

Explore the Dark Playground

The Dark Playground is that shadowy realm where you indulge in guilty pleasures and regrettable procrastination. Occasionally, it’s okay to take a stroll there, but don’t set up camp. Schedule your Dark Playground visits like appointments, so you don’t accidentally lose yourself in the endless YouTube spiral of cat videos. You plan to watch just one episode of a new TV series, but before you know it, you’ve binge-watched three seasons, missed meals, and become a certified expert in fictional crime-solving. It’s a dark and twisty journey, indeed.

Create Your Life Calendar

Picture your life as a series of boxes, each representing a week. Imagine all those empty boxes filling up as time goes by. Now, consider what you want to accomplish in those boxes. Are they filled with memorable experiences, meaningful work, or just hours lost to the Monkey’s mischief? Make each box count. You look at your life calendar and notice that most of your boxes are filled with Netflix icons. Realizing this, you decide to swap some of them with icons of your face, your dog, or a motivational quote. It’s time to make your life more than just a streaming service.

Avoid Becoming a Spectator in Your Own Life:

The worst kind of procrastination is when you find yourself watching life pass you by, like a movie you’re not participating in. John Oliver would say, “Don’t be a background character in your own story.” Take the lead role, direct your own life, and make it a story worth telling. You catch yourself watching a YouTube video of someone living their dream life while sitting on your couch in your pajamas. It’s time to put down the popcorn, get out of those pajamas, and start scripting your own blockbuster.

In conclusion, my fellow procrastinators, remember that life is a balancing act, much like trying to walk a tightrope while juggling flaming torches (or at least that’s how it feels sometimes). Embrace the quirks of your Instant Gratification Monkey, but don’t let it steal the show. Set those artificial deadlines, prioritize your tasks, and venture into the Dark Playground when you must. Your Life Calendar awaits, and it’s up to you to fill those boxes with moments that truly matter. So, go forth, conquer procrastination, and make your life a masterpiece that even the Monkey can’t resist applauding. Now, off you go to seize the day, or at least schedule a meeting with your inner Panic Monster. Cheers!
